Malak’s MYNA Journey: Faith, Community, and Passion

Behind every impactful initiative is a story of dedication, growth, and leadership. As we dive into the experiences that shape MYNA's thriving community, we turn to Malak Salem, a former Editor-in-Chief of the MYNA Blog. Through her time at MYNA camps and her pivotal role in steering this blog, she exemplifies how MYNA inspires young Muslims to rise, thrive, and leave a legacy of their own. In this interview, Malak reflects on her journey, the lessons she’s learned, and how MYNA has shaped her into who she is today.

1. Can you tell us what initially drew you to MYNA Camps?

I come from a big MYNA family. My mom went to the first ever MYNA camp where she made so many Muslim friends who she still goes on yearly trips with. Growing up, my three older siblings would go to MYNA almost every year and I was always so sad to miss out. I finally went to my first camp at 12 and it was definitely worth the wait.

2. What are some standout memories or moments from MYNA Camps that had a lasting impact on you? What are your favorite parts about camps?

The biggest thing that stands out about MYNA that you really can’t find anywhere else in the world is the sense of Muslim community at a young age that is driven with a desire to strengthen spiritual connection with Allah. The feeling of being in nature, surrounded by likeminded Muslims who are all there for the same reason, for a whole week of fun and love for Allah is something that is incomparable to any other experience you could possibly have as a young Muslim in America.

3. How has attending MYNA Camps influenced your personal growth or perspective on faith and community?

MYNA has helped me grow throughout the years in many areas of my life. First and foremost, my faith has grown which has improved my life all around. I’ve also grown in a social sense by making connections with other young Muslims—and wise advisors—that will last me a lifetime. These people have taught me so much and have inspired me to pursue my passions and are still, to this day, encouraging me to be the best version of myself. I’ve also grown in a professional sense. MYNA leadership gave me opportunities that allowed me to grow in a way that I could never have learned in a classroom.

4. Last year, you were a the MYNA Blog-Editor-In-Chief - what was your journey there and what was your favorite part?

Being the MYNA blog-editor-in-chief gave me an experience that solidified my decision to pursue a career in journalism. Capturing peoples stories, whether it be through written word or film, is my passion and I was able to practice it with MYNA. I would recommend MYNA leadership to anyone who is looking to pursue their passion, and anyone who is looking to find their passion.

5. If you could give one piece of advice to new attendees, what would it be?

Be open to trying new things and get out of your comfort zone. These two things can lead you to experiences and relationships that you never thought you could have and will be worth your while.

6. If you were talking to a potential attendee who is still deciding if they want to go or not, what you would tell them?

Just do it. You don’t have anything to lose and as someone who has been in it for years, I can tell you with full confidence that it will change your life, in every aspect of your life, for the better.

Malak Salem’s story is a testament to the transformative power of MYNA camps—a place where faith, community, and leadership come together to inspire young Muslims to grow spiritually, socially, and professionally. MYNA offers a rare opportunity to build lifelong connections, deepen your relationship with Allah, and discover passions that can shape your future. If you’re looking for an experience that combines fun, faith, and personal growth, don’t miss out on the upcoming MYNA Winter Camp!
