Reflections On My First MYNA Camp

I always dreamed of going to MYNA camp when I was younger. Hearing my
family’s tales of what a life changing experience it was for them, I never doubted that
MYNA would have to be a big part of my life. Whether it was the friendships that were
built, the pranks (largely including shaving cream) that were crafted, or the important
lessons that were absorbed, I was ready to join in on the fun.

When I finally turned 12, however, my first camp differed slightly from what I
was expecting. Upon arrival we sat down in a circle and started our icebreakers. I
immediately started feeling connections to some of the other girls I had talked to.
When it was time for us to go to our cabins with our counselors, I realized I couldn’t
carry all my luggage in addition to my sleeping bag. I felt instantly at home however
when one of the older girls helped me out.

The first night at camp was an exciting blur with the introduction session,
dinner, an activity, and then walking back to our cabin. Like I had heard, there was
little sleeping involved in camp and my new friends and I stayed up late telling stories,
eating snacks, and reflecting on what we had learned from our first session.
As the days went by, I found myself not wanting to leave. Between playing
basketball, doing archery, and going on hikes I connected with my new friends on a
different level. However it took the reflections with my cabin group at the end of each
day for me to realize the spiritual growth in myself.

When the time finally came for us all to go home I felt as if I were changed.
Although it was difficult leaving all the amazing new people I had met at camp I was
excited to build these new friendships and review the lessons and goals I had for
myself. I couldn’t wait until the next camp!
