That MYNA Camp Life
There were 6 camps all this past summer, but the one that I went to was, in my opinion, the best. And that was the Midwest Camp. I'm sure that if you asked other campers who attended the other camps about their experience, they'd say theirs was the best. But that is because they haven't been to the Midwest Camp, and I may be a little bias here.
How can I completely explain myself? Close your eyes and imagine this: making new friends who are just like you, benefitting physically, emotionally, and spiritually, learning about the deen from certified teachers, spending time outdoors, being in an all-Muslim safe space, all rolled into one. Multiply that by 50, and you won’t even come close to how sweet this summer camp was.
My favorite memory was at my first camp when I was only 11 years old. Everyone was splitting up to find their counselors for the first time. I remember just looking around at the giants around me, feeling lost. Then someone called out my name. My counselor was waving and smiling at me, telling me to come join their group. I felt at ease at once.
It was like something clicked.
After that, everyone at camp felt like they were my brothers, always willing to help me, guide me, and make me feel at home. That's how it is for everyone at first, no matter your age. You soon start to feel comfortable, and honestly, this experience is life-changing. I felt like I mattered and that I was a valuable member of this organization.
So, if you’re hesitant and unsure, take it from me. There’s nothing to be hesitant about. Join camp. Open your heart to new experiences and making new friends. If you don’t like it, then you can always leave. But you should at least try.
